YEARS  AGO
By coincidence, the Temple Period ends at just about the time projected from Bible dates for The Great Flood.

The Megalithic Culture of Malta came to an end at about 2,400 BC (or around 4,400 years ago.)  The temple building suddenly stopped and the monuments seem to have been abandoned for a long time.  There is no sign of massacre or epidemic disease.  Some scientists think that a series of dry years might have driven them to leave for greener areas.

Over the thousands of years that followed, the  islands were occupied by many different cultures, and came to be part of large territories such as the Roman Empire.

Although it is tempting to think that the temple people sailed away to inspire other civilizations, only DNA testing could tell us for sure if their descendents have lived on in other parts of the world.
