YEARS  AGO
Red seems to be the signature color of the Neolithic Age.  Many ancient cultures used red ochre pigment for ritual purposes.

The standing temples were life-centers.  For the dead, the temples were mirrored underground by carving the architectural features from solid rock.  These special underground shrines were cave-like communal cemeteries such as the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum.  (Read an article about the Hypogeum at  http://otsf.org/Archaeoacoustics.htm )

Bones were found jumbled together in pits, and had been treated with red ochre pigment.  Some anthropologists think the color may have signified blood or the life-force, perhaps as part of a  reincarnation belief.  Eerie red paintings on the ceilings in the Hypogeum can still be seen.
